Sylvester, James Joseph
(1814–97)
British mathematician. Sylvester was a brilliant mathematics student at Cambridge but as a Jew was unable to obtain a degree. He accepted a professorship at the University of Virginia in 1841, but had to give it up because of his liberal attitude to slavery. He later occupied chairs at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and in Oxford. He was a lifelong member of the Royal Society, which established the Sylvester Medal in his honour.
