Anielewicz, Mordecai
(1919–43)
Commander of the Warsaw Ghetto Revolt. A labour Zionist leader in Poland, Anielewicz was one of the organizers of the Jewish resistance in Nazi-occupied Warsaw. In the ghetto, he founded an urban kibbutz and published an underground newspaper (‘Against the Stream’). He was appointed commander of the ZOB, the Jewish fighting organization in the Warsaw ghetto, and led the revolt against the Germans in April 1943. On 8 May, he was killed in the command bunker at 18 Mila Street. The kibbutz of Yad Mordecai, at the northern end of the Gaza Strip, was named in his memory and has a large statue of him.
