Straus, Nathan
(1848–1931)
   US merchant and philanthropist. Nathan Straus was one of the heads of R.H.Macy, the New York department store, and was a well-known philanthropist. He was deeply interested in public health and campaigned successfully for pasteurization of milk in New York State. He endowed health and child care centres in Palestine, under the auspices of Hadassah.
   His younger brother Oscar Solomon (1850–1926) served three times as United States minister or ambassador to Turkey in 1887–9, 1898–1900, 1909– 10, as United States member of The Hague Court of Arbitration, and as secretary of commerce and labour under President Theodore Roosevelt (1906–9), being the first Jewish cabinet minister in the United States. He was president of the American Jewish Historical Society.
