Suzman, Helen

Suzman, Helen
(b. 1917)
South African politician. A university lecturer in economics, Helen Suzman was elected to parliament in 1953 as a member of the opposition United Party. She was one of twelve members of the liberal wing of the party that seceded on race issues and formed the Progressive Party. From 1961, she remained the sole member of that party in the House, and a fearless and articulate spokesman for the non-white races who, under the South African Nationalists’ political system, were not given representation in the legislature. In 1974 six more members of her party were elected and when she resigned in 1989, she was the longest serving member of Parliament. She has twice been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
