Alkalai, Judah ben-Solomon Hai

Alkalai, Judah ben-Solomon Hai
(1798–1878)
Serbian forerunner of Zionism. Alkalai was the rabbi of the Sephardi Ladino-speaking community in Sarajevo. In a series of pamphlets and articles, he contended on religious grounds that a return of the Jews to the Holy Land had to precede the messianic redemption. His proposals included an international Jewish council, a tithe on incomes, and promoting agricultural settlement in Palestine under British protection.
Alkalai travelled through Europe trying to gain support for his ideas, with little success. In 1852 he visited Britain, where one of his pamphlets was printed in English: ‘Harbinger of Good Tidings - An Address to the Jewish Nation’. He settled in Palestine in 1874.
