Walter (Schlesinger), Bruno
(1876–1962)
   German conductor. Having become a leading conductor of operatic and orchestral music in his native Germany and in Austria, Bruno Walter had to leave with the Nazi rise to power. He settled in the United States and served as conductor and musical adviser of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra 1947–9. He was regarded as the most eminent interpreter of Mozart and of Gustav MAHLER, with whom he had worked in Vienna for more than a decade.
