Werfel, Franz
   Austrian writer. The son of a Prague merchant, Werfel became a celebrated Viennese playwright, novelist and poet of the Expressionist school. Among his successful plays were the Spiegelmensch trilogy (1920), Juarez und Maximilian (1924) and Paul among the Jews (1928; German original 1926). His biblical play, The Eternal Road (1937; German original 1935), was produced in New York by Max REINHARDT with music by Kurt Weill. Werfel left Nazi Germany and settled in California in 1940. Two of his late novels became famous films, The Song of Bernadette (1942.) and Jacobowsky and the Colonel (1944). His collected poems were published in
