Willstaetter, Richard
(1872–1942)
   German organic chemist and Nobel laureate, 1915. Willstaetter was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work in the field of plant pigments. During World War I he designed an effective gas mask, for which he was awarded the civilian Iron Cross. In 1924, in protest against the increasing anti-Semitism at the University of Munich, he resigned his academic post there. In March 1939, he was forced to leave Germany for Switzerland. His autobiography, Aus meinem Leben, was published posthumously in 1949.
