Wolfson, Sir Isaac
(1897–1991)
   British merchant and philanthropist. Born into a poor Glasgow family, Wolfson became head of the Great Universal Stores (GUS) retailing empire. The Wolfson Foundation established in 1955 distributed many millions of pounds to charitable, educational and cultural causes, including the endowment of Wolfson Colleges at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Wolfson was president of the United Synagogue in Britain and national chairman of the JPA (Zionist fund-raising). The profits from his economic enterprises in Israel were used for higher education, the Supreme Rabbinical Centre in Jerusalem, and the building of many synagogues.
