Zhitlowsky, Chaim
(1865–1943)
   Russian Yiddishist. Zhitlowsky was active in the Russian revolutionary movement. After the 1882. pogroms, he became the foremost exponent of Diaspora nationalism - the concept that the Jews should develop their national identity and autonomy in the Galut, with socialism as their political creed and Yiddish as their common language. Zhitlowsky lived in the United States from 1908 and was an influential Yiddish writer and editor.
