Gaon of Sura. Amram was gaon of Sura in Babylonia for eighteen years and the author of the oldest surviving prayer book, Seder Kav Amram. He wrote a great number of responses, over two hundred of which are extant, and he kept up close ties with Spanish Jewry. But he is best known for his Seder, which contains all the prayers for the whole year and the laws and customs for each one. Amram was the first person to set down the order, and his Seder had a large circulation and was used by rabbis in Spain, France and Germany.
