Antigonus II

Antigonus II
(1st century BC.)
   Last Hasmonean king of Judea, reigned 40– 37 BC. In 40 BC, with the help of an invading Parthian army, Antigonus II took Jerusalem, deposed his uncle HYRCANUS II, and proclaimed himself king under Parthian protection. Three years later Jerusalem was retaken by a Roman army and HEROD THE GREAT was installed as king. Antigonus was sent northward as a prisoner to the camp of Mark Antony, who ordered him to be beheaded.
