Antokolski, Mark
(1843–1902)
   Russian sculptor. Antokolski came from a poor Vilna family and had a cheder education. He was admitted to the St Petersburg Academy of Art and became a leading Russian sculptor, whose work aimed at conveying a spiritual and social message. For some years his subjects were Jewish, such as The Jewish Tailor (1864). But then after a spell in Rome for his health, he swung away to Russian historical figures, such as Ivan the Terrible (1871) and portrait statues of the czar’s family and such eminent contemporary writers as Tolstoy and Turgenev. Coming under anti-Semitic attack during the pogroms of 1882, he left the country for good and settled in Paris as an emigré.
