Arafat, Yasser

Arafat, Yasser
(b. 1929)
Palestinian leader. Arafat was born in Jerusalem and educated at Cairo University where he was elected President of the League of Palestinian Students. In 1956 he was one of the founders of the Arab guerilla movement, Al Fatah, which became the leading military faction of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. In 1968 Arafat became President of the PLO and in 1971 he took command of the Palestinian Revolutionary Forces. In 1974 he spoke of the plight of the Palestinians to the United Nations’ General Assembly to tumultuous acclaim. In 1982, as a result of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, he was compelled to leave Beirut and in 1988, in opposition to the more radical elements in the PLO, he publicly recognized the State of Israel. Despite pledging support for Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait which damaged his international credibility, Arafat has succeeded in reaching agreement with Israel and a degree of autonomy for the West Bank Palestinians was established in 1994.
