Augustine
(354–430)
   Early Church Father. Augustine was the bishop of Hippo in North Africa, and the outstanding intellect among the Fathers of the Church. The City of God (410–26), his great theological work, took the doctrines of the Church into paths quite foreign to Jewish thought and teaching, especially his tenets of predestination and the innate sinfulness of man. For the loftiness of his thinking he was recognized by succeeding generations as the leading Christian authority.
   He held that the dispersion of the Jews was not only a punishment for their refusal to see that ‘the New Testament reveals what is concealed in the Old’, but also an element in the divine plan for the spread of Christianity. Unlike JUSTIN, an earlier Church Father, he did not attempt to stigmatize the Jewish Law as contemptible, and was deeply concerned with the Old Testament. He refuted the charge that the Jews were guilty of deicide.
