Balcon, Michael
(1896–1977)
   British film producer. Balcon was one of the leading producers of the Ealing Studios. Among his productions were the Hitchcock-directed The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), The Thirty-Nine Steps (1935) and The Secret Agent (1936). He also backed The Man of Aran (1934) and the financial failure Jew Süss (1934) in which he demonstrated his commitment to his Jewish heritage. Among his more famous Ealing comedies were Dead of Night (1945), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) and The Lady Killers (1955).
