Ballin, Albert

Ballin, Albert
(1857–1918)
German shipping magnate. The son of a Danish Jew who settled in Hamburg and established a small passenger service, Ballin expanded the firm into the largest shipping company in Germany, called the Hamburg-America Line. It had four hundred vessels in its service. Ballin brought about the American-German shipping agreement of 1912 and became the kaiser’s consultant on economic affairs. He lost influence with the kaiser for his pacifist views and committed suicide after Germany’s defeat in World War I.
