- Barsimon, Jacob
- (17th century)Probably the earliest Jewish settler in New Amsterdam (New York). Barsimon arrived in New Amsterdam on 8 July 1654 aboard the Peartree from Holland. He thus preceded the September arrival of twenty-three Jews from Brazil. He insisted on his right to do guard duty like the other inhabitants instead of having to pay a tax or fine. Governor Peter Stuyvesant dismissed his plea, but was overruled by the Dutch West Indian Company.
