Bograshov (Boger), Chaim

(1876–1963)

   Israel educator. Bograshov grew up in the Ukraine, where he taught in Jewish schools before obtaining a doctorate in Switzerland. He was a delegate to the Sixth Zionist Congress in 1903, and the following year was asked to go to Palestine and survey the possibility of a high school with Hebrew as its medium of instruction. Two years later, in 1906, he helped found the Herzliah Gymnazia outside Jaffa. He was at the Gymnazia for forty years, as a teacher of geology and geography, and later as principal. The school was the nursery for a whole generation of Israel leaders. Bograshov was one of the founding fathers of Tel Aviv and after the Arab riots of 1921, established its Nordia quarter to house Jews who had fled from Arab Jaffa. He was active in political affairs on behalf of the General Zionist Party and was one of its Knesset members from 1951 to 1955.
