Carmi, Tcharney
(b. 1925)
   Israeli writer. Carmi was born in New York and educated at Yeshiva University, in Palestine and Columbia. After World War II, he worked with war orphans in France before moving back to Israel where he fought in the War of Independence.
   He has produced several volumes of poetry, mainly on the themes of love and the Israeli landscape. They include Leyad ‘Even Hato’im (1981), translated as At the Stone of Losses (1983). His best-known poems are El Harimon (‘To the Pomegranate’, 1983) and Sheleg Biyrushalayim (‘Snow in Jerusalem’). Carmi is also an anthologist and has edited The Penguin Book of Hebrew Verse (1981) and (with Ezra Spicehandler) The Modern Hebrew Poem Itself (1965).
