- Crémieux, Isaac Moïse Adolphe
(1796–1880)
French lawyer and statesman. After practising law in his home-town of Nimes, Crémieux went to Paris in 1830 and played a prominent role in the liberal politics of his time. A brilliant lawyer, he was twice minister of justice, in the provisional revolutionary government of 1848 and again in 1870–1. He introduced such reforms as the abolition of slavery in the colonies and the establishment of trial by jury. In 1870 his Décret Crémieux enfranchised Algerian Jews. Crémieux was active in the struggle against anti-Semitism. He and Sir Moses MONTEFIORE went to Damascus and were successful in obtaining the acquittal of the Jewish accused in the murder libel of 1840. He maintained a close link with Jewish communities in North Africa and was president of the Universelle Israélite Alliance. In 1875, he was elected a life senator of the French National Assembly.
