Eder, Montague David

Eder, Montague David
(1865–1936)
British Zionist. Eder was the first psychoanalyst to practice in England, and together with Ernest Jones, founded the Psychoanalytical Association in 1913. He was related to Israel ZANGWILL and involved in the activities of the Jewish Territorial Organization (ITO) after Zangwill and others seceded from the Zionist movement. In 1918, Eder was invited by WEIZMANN to participate in the Zionist Commission for Palestine, and he was left in charge when Weizmann returned to London. His patience and humanity overcame his lack of Zionist background, and of the languages spoken in the yishuv. Above all, he got on very well with the British authorities. From 1921 Eder was on the Zionist Executive, first in Jerusalem and then in - London. He travelled to Russia in 1921 and attempted unsuccessfully to persuade the Soviet authorities to permit Zionist activities. From 1930 to 1932. Eder was president of the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland.
