Ehrlich, Paul

Ehrlich, Paul
(1854–1915)
German bacteriologist and Nobel laureate, 1908. As a research student, Silesian-born Ehrlich discovered several bacterial stains, and also a new variety of white blood corpuscles. Working with Koch on staining tubercle bacillus, he contracted tuberculosis and was forced to go abroad for three years. His contribution to the production of a diphtheria anti-toxin in 1892 gained him a professorship at the University of Berlin. He was then appointed head of a newly-opened institute for serum research in Berlin. His discovery of trypan red, a cure for sleeping sickness and his confirmation in 1910 that the arsenic compound salvarsan, or 606, was effective against the spirochetes of syphilis, marked the beginning of modern chemotherapy. In 1908 Ehrlich shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for his work on immunity and serum therapy. Ehrlich’s basic concepts and methods remain the basis for research in the fields of haematology, immunology and chemotherapy.
