Russian film director. In their epic scope, technical innovations and handling of crowd scenes, some of Eisenstein’s Russian historical films were masterpieces of the cinematic art. Among the best-known ones were Battleship Potemkin (1925); Alexander Nevsky (1938), for which he won the Order of Lenin; and the first two parts of Ivan the Terrible (1946).
