Eisenstein, Sergei Mikhailovich
- Eisenstein, Sergei Mikhailovich
(1898–1948)
Russian film director. In their epic scope, technical innovations and handling of crowd scenes, some of Eisenstein’s Russian historical films were masterpieces of the cinematic art. Among the best-known ones were Battleship Potemkin (1925); Alexander Nevsky (1938), for which he won the Order of Lenin; and the first two parts of Ivan the Terrible (1946). His ideas were expounded in two books, The Film Sense (1942) and Film Form (1949).
