Eliot, George (Mary Ann Evans)

Eliot, George (Mary Ann Evans)
(1819–80)
English novelist. Born in War-wickshire of a lower middle-class family, Mary Evans, writing under the male pseudonym George Eliot, is regarded as a precursor of Zionism. She was already an established novelist, after Mill on the Floss and Silas Marner, but her last book, Daniel Deronda (1876), is considered one of her finest. She had always taken an interest in Jews, had Jewish friends and had even tried to learn Hebrew. In this novel her hero discovers his Jewishness in his twenties and goes to Palestine ‘to found a new Jewish republic where there is equality of protection… then our race shall have an organic centre…’. George Eliot at-tacked anti- Semitism in an essay, ‘The Modern Hep-Hep’.
