Feiwel, Berthold

(1875–1937)

   Austrian Zionist. Although Feiwel came from an assimilated background, he was an early convert to Zionism, and helped HERZL to organize the First Zionist Congress at Basle in 1897. From 1901 he edited the Zionist weekly Die Welt, and was one of the founders of Juedischer Verlag, in Berlin, which published Hebrew and Yiddish works in German translation. After World War I, Feiwel joined WEIZMANN in London, and became director of the Keren Hayesod at its foundation in 1920. In 1929 he took charge of the Jewish Colonial Trust, and was appointed a director of the Jewish Agency. He settled in Palestine in 1933.
