Franklin, Selim
(1814–83)
   British Columbia pioneer. The son of a Liverpool banker, Franklin emigrated to the United States and took part in the California gold rush of 1849, together with his brother Lumley (1812–73). They settled in Victoria, British Columbia, where Lumley became mayor and Selim was elected to the legislative assembly. He took his seat after a long dispute over the Christian oath required of members. A river and a street in Victoria were named after him.
