Geiger, Abraham

Geiger, Abraham
(1810–74)
German Reform rabbi. An accomplished historian and the holder of various rabbinical appointments, Geiger advocated the reform of Judaism, for instance, the use of the vernacular in worship. He opposed Jewish nationalism, and regarded Judaism as purely religious. He was instrumental in the foundation of the Juedisch-Theologisches Seminar in Breslau, and in 1871 the Hochschule fuer die Wissenschaft des Judentums in Berlin, where he was director until his death.
