Ginsberg, Allen
(b. 1926)
   American poet. Ginsberg was born in Newark, New Jersey and was educated at Columbia University. He was a key figure of the ‘beat-generation’ of the 1950s and the counter-culture movements of the Sixties. He was closely involved with William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac and was part of the homosexual and drug scene of the period. Later he was King of the May in Prague in 1965 and an organizer of the 1967 San Francisco Be-In. His poem Howl was censored by the United States government and made him a national celebrity. Other works include Empty Mirror (1960), Kaddish (1961) - a lament for the death of his mother, Planet News (1968), Indian Journals (1970) and the Fall of America (1973) which won the National Book Award. His Collected Poems were published in 1984.
