Ginsberg, Ruth
(b. 1933)
   American lawyer. Ginsberg was born in Brooklyn and educated at Cornell, Harvard and Columbia Universities. She has taught at Rutgers and Columbia Law Schools and became a circuit judge (Court of Appeal) in 1980. She is known for her work for Equal Rights and in 1993 she became only the second woman to be elected a Justice of the Supreme Court. GINZBERG, Louis 1873–1953. US Talmud scholar. Ginzberg, who was born in Lithuania and educated in Germany, emigrated to the US in 1899, and taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary. He brought secular scientific methods to bear upon his researches into talmudic history. His major work, The Legends of the Jews (1909–38), is a study of the sources and development of Jewish mythology and an attempt to correlate these with the environment of other cultures.
