Hananiah ben-Teradyon

Hananiah ben-Teradyon
(2nd century)
Palestinian tanna and martyr. The reputed head of an academy at Sikhin in the Galilee, Hananiah fell victim to the religious persecution by the Romans after the crushing of the Bar-Kochba revolt in 135. Arrested for defiantly teaching in public, he was sentenced to be burned at the stake with the Torah Scroll wrapped around him, and died with great fortitude. His wife was also condemned to death, and his daughter consigned to a brothel.
