Chief minister of Gibraltar. Hassan was born in Gibraltar into a Sephardi family that had been settled there for generations. An able lawyer, he became mayor of the colony, leader of its legislative council and chief minister from 1964 to 1969. He staunchly defended the right of the inhabitants of the Rock to remain under British rule instead of being handed over to Spain, and he was sent to the United Nations to take part in the committee debates on this issue. He led the small local Jewish community and was an active Zionist.
