Herzog, Isaac Halevi
(1888–1959)
   Chief rabbi of Israel. Isaac Herzog’s father came from Poland to be rabbi of Leeds in England. He himself was appointed chief rabbi of the Irish Free State in 1925. An ardent Zionist, he founded the Mizrachi Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1936 he was elected as the Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Palestine. He travelled abroad raising funds and trying to rescue orphan children hidden in monasteries and convents. He published several volumes of responsa.
   His elder son Chaim (b. 1918) was the director of military intelligence in the Israel army, and a well-known broadcaster. The younger son Yaakov (1921– 72), also ordained as a rabbi, served as minister to Washington, ambassador to Canada, and director-general of the Prime Minister’s Office.
