Heyse, Paul
(1830–1914)
   German author and Nobel laureate, 1910. In the late 19 century Paul Heyse, whose mother was Jewish, wrote novels and novellas in elegant verse and prose that enjoyed great literary esteem. Towards the end of the century, they were attacked and derided by the German naturalist school for their obsession with style and form. However, he was the first German writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
