Hillman, Sidney

Hillman, Sidney
(1887–1946)
US labour leader. In his youth, Hillman rejected his orthodox background in Lithuania and became a revolutionary. He was imprisoned by the czar and on his release at the age of twenty, emigrated to the United States. At that time the garment industry, both owners and workers, was almost entirely Jewish. Hillman found work as a cutter in Chicago and turned his energy to reforming the ‘sweat shops’. By a series of strikes, he pioneered the forty-four-hour week and various other lasting reforms. He moved to New York and was elected president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America in 1915.
During World War II he was Roosevelt’s chief adviser on labour affairs. After the war he became vice-president of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU). Hillman took a keen interest in the Histadrut, Israel’s labour federation, and tried to influence Roosevelt in favour of Zionist aspirations.
