Hurst, Fannie
(1889–1968)
   US writer. Starting with Just Around the Corner in 1914, Fannie Hurst became widely acclaimed as a short-story writer and then as a novelist. Among her best-known books were A President Is Born (1928); Back Street (1930); Any Woman (1950). Her work reflected a first-hand knowledge of the poor of New York; women’s rights; and the struggles of Jewish immigrant families. Her birthplace, Hamilton, Ohio, and her assimilated comfortable family background in St Louis, Ma., were far removed from these themes, but she was driven by a deep social concern and an increasing Jewish and Zionist consciousness, especially after the advent of Hitler. The arum lily became a personal emblem for her and she always wore one.
