Isaacs, Sir Isaac Alfred
(1855–1948)
   Governor-general and chief justice of Australia. The son of a Polish immigrant, Isaacs advanced rapidly as a lawyer and politician in the state of Victoria. Elected to the state parliament in 1892, he became solicitor general, then attorney general. A strong advocate of federation, he was elected to the first federal parliament in 1900, and was attorney general until 1906, when he was appointed to the federal High Court. In 1930 he became chief justice of Australia. A year later he was appointed the first Australian-born governor-general.
