Ishmael ben-Elisha

   Tanna. Ishmael was one of the great sages of the Mishnah. When he was a small boy, he was taken captive by the Romans. Rabbi Joshua, on hearing that a Jewish child was in prison, went there and quoted a biblical passage. Getting a biblical reply, Joshua promptly ransomed him. Ishmael became his pupil and later his associate. He was so dedicated to Torah study that when a nephew asked him whether secular studies were permissible, he replied, ‘Yes, if you find a time which is neither day or night.’ He did hold, though, that a scholar should earn a living. He was famous for his thirteen rules for biblical exegesis. Ishmael was of priestly descent and is often called ‘High Priest’. According to legend, he knew the Divine Name, the Tetragrammaton, and uttered it in order to ascend to heaven and find out if the death of the Ten Martyrs at the hands of the Romans was ordained. Some say Ishmael too died a martyr’s death.
