Israeli, Isaac ben-Solomon
(c. 855–c. 955)
   North African physician and philosopher. Israeli was born in Egypt and first gained a reputation as an eye specialist. Around 905 he made his way to Kairouan (Tunisia) and the court of Ziyadat Allah, the last of the Aghlabid rulers. When the Fatimids overthrew the Aghlabids (909), Israeli became court physician to Ubayd Allah al Mahdi (910– 34) and his successors. Israeli lived to be over a hundred. His writings include original treatises on various medical topics, such as urine, fevers, foodstuffs and drugs. He also wrote on philosophy and metaphysics. His books were written in Arabic and were later translated into Latin and Hebrew.
