Joseph ha-Zarfati
(‘the Frenchman’)
(14th century)
   Artist in Spain. Joseph illustrated the beautiful Cervera Bible of 1300 (now in Lisbon Library), as he himself states in folio 449. This is the only work known to be by his hand. His work shows French and Castilian influence, but the motifs he employs are largely original. Many subsequent illustrators were influenced by his style.
