Kaplan, Eliezer
(1891–1952)
   Israel labour leader and minister of finance. Kaplan qualified as an engineer in his native Russia and settled in Palestine in 1920. During the Mandate he was prominent in the Jewish labour movement. As treasurer of the Jewish Agency, he laid the foundations for the financial structure of the future state, whose first minister of finance he became. He belonged to the moderate wing of Mapai (Israel Labour Party), supporting WEIZMANN against BEN-GURION at the Zionist congress of 1946.
