Karelitz, Avraham Yeshayahu (Chazon Ish)
(1878–1953)
   Israel talmudic scholar. Chazon Ish (the name under which Karelitz wrote his more than forty books) was a notable modern example of the Jewish sage who occupied no official position but exerted authority through his exceptional learning and piety. He lived in Vilna until 1933, when he emigrated to Palestine. In his simple home in Bnei Brak his advice and rulings were sought on the practical application of the halachah to the problems of the state and modern life.
