Kitaj, R.B.
(b. 1932)
   Anglo-American artist. Kitaj was born in Cleveland. He studied art at the Cooper Union Institute in New York, in Vienna, at the Ruskin School in Oxford and at the Royal College of Art. Subsequently he settled in England and is considered to be an important figure in English Pop Art. Since the mid 1970s, his Jewish background has proved to be an important ingredient of his art since his main subjects have been exile, the Holocaust and Jewish victimization. Among his most famous paintings are The Murder of Rosa Luxemburg (1960–2.) and The Refugees (1983–4).
