Langer, František
(1888–1965)
   Czech writer. Langer was head of the Czechoslovak Army Medical Corps, and became internationally known as a playwright. Max Reinhardt staged two of his plays, Outskirts (1925) and The Camel through the Needle’s Eye (1929; Czech original 1923), and others were adapted for the screen. He was also a fine novelist and writer of short stories. His younger brother, Jiří Mordechai Langer (1894–1943), became an Orthodox chassidic Jew. He published a collection of chassidic tales, Nine Gates (1937; Eng. trans. 1961) and two volumes of Hebrew verse.
