Levin, Meyer
(1905–81)
   American writer. Levin was born in Chicago. His early books such as Frankie and Johnny (1930) had no Jewish elements, but he later became involved in the Zionist cause. Yehuda (1931) was set on a kibbutz, The Golden Mountain (1932) was a collection of Hasidic tales and The Old Bunch (1937) centred round a group of Jews in Chicago in the 1920s. Levin also worked as a journalist and after World War II he was involved in smuggling Jewish refugees into Palestine. My Father’s House (1947) discusses the fate of the Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe and he also produced documentary films on Zionism. He dramatized the diary of Anne FRANK and his later works include Compulsion (1956), Eva (1959), The Fanatic (1963), The Stronghold (1965), The Settlers (1972) and The Harvest (1978).
