Lipchitz, Jacques (Chaim Jacob)

Lipchitz, Jacques (Chaim Jacob)
(1891–1973)
US sculptor. Lipchitz left his native Lithuania to study in Paris, where he lived until the Nazi invasion. He then settled in Hastings-on-the-Hudson, outside New York. His earlier work was strongly influenced by cubism and African sculpture. Later, he developed a baroque manner with strong symbolic themes drawn from the Bible, Greek myths and modern Jewish experience. Amongst his best-known sculptures are those depicting Prometheus, Jacob and the Angel, The Kapparot Sacrifice (the Holocaust), and The Miracle (the birth of Israel). All his casts have been left to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem where he was buried at his own request.
