Luzzatti, Luigi
(1841–1927)
Italian statesman. Born into an ancient Venetian Jewish family, Luzzatti taught economics in Milan and law in Padua. He was elected to the Italian parliament in 1871, and occupied his seat for fifty years, being appointed to the senate in 1921. He served three times as minister of finance (1891–2, 1896–8 and 1904–6), as minister of agriculture (1909) and as prime minister (1910–11). Luzzatti showed deep concern for the poor peasants in Italy; he introduced agrarian reforms and fostered a co-operative movement. He was sympathetic to Zionism and admired Jewish colonization in Palestine.
