Lyons, Sir Joseph

Lyons, Sir Joseph
(1848–1917)
English caterer. Up to 1887, London-born Joseph Lyons was a watercolour artist of some distinction. In that year, in partnership with Alfred SALMON, Isadore Gluckstein and the Montague Brothers, he set up the catering firm of J.Lyons and Co. It grew to be the largest in Britain, and the Strand Corner House became a London institution. One of the popular features of their chain of teashops were the neatly uniformed waitresses called ‘nippies’. The firm regularly caters for the royal garden parties held annually at Buckingham Palace. Lyons was active in municipal affairs and was knighted in 1911.
