Mahler, Gustav
(1860–1911)
   Austrian composer and conductor. For a decade from 1897 Mahler was the celebrated music director of the Imperial Opera in Vienna, an appointment for which he was required to accept baptism as a Catholic. He was later a guest conductor of the New York Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic. His fame as a composer rests on ten symphonies and a number of song cycles.
