(1875–1962)
Israel religious politician. A devotee of the Mizrachi (religious Zion-ist) movement, Maimon settled in Palestine in 1913 and after World War I was associated with Rabbi KOOK in establishing the country’s chief rabbinate. On ‘Black Sabbath’ in June 1946 he was arrested by the British with other Zionist leaders and interned at Latrun. He was released by the high commissioner after an outcry provoked by the fact that troops had forced him to ride on the Sabbath, thus desecrating it. Maimon was minister for religious affairs in the first government of Israel. His sister Ada (b. 1893) was active in the Labour movement in Palestine, and began the Pioneer Women’s Movement. In 1930 she established and directed the Ayanot Agricultural School that was founded and financed by the Women’s International Zionist Organization (WIZO).
